đź“– Introduction
Many of us spend our entire lives chasing two elusive goals: physical health and true freedom. When faced with chronic illness, we often look everywhere for a cure, not realizing that the heavy burdens stored in our minds might be the very root of our physical pain. Similarly, we often chase “freedom” by seeking better living conditions—believing that moving from a cramped room to a spacious house will finally give us peace—only to discover that our restless, suffocating thoughts travel right along with us. But what if the key to healing your body and liberating your life is simply emptying your mind?
In this post, two practitioners share how mind subtraction meditation helped them break free from physical and mental suffering. A 56-year-old shares her profound realization that the chronic illnesses she battled since childhood were actually caused by her accumulated mind, and how discarding those thoughts finally brought her relief. Meanwhile, a 54-year-old with a restless “tiger” personality opens up about how upgrading to a large apartment never brought her the freedom she craved. By learning to sit and empty her mind, she finally escaped what felt like a living hell and tasted true peace.
Read their inspiring stories to discover how letting go of your false mind can heal your body and lead you to the genuine freedom you have always been searching for.
💬 Story 1: “So my mind was the cause of the illness”
By Hwang Myung-ok / Age 56 / Level 1
I started this meditation at the recommendation of my husband, who is currently training in Level 4. I have lived with illnesses since childhood. It is still the same now.
“While meditating, I realized that the illness originated from my mind, the remembered thoughts of my lived life.”
At first, I thought it wouldn’t work, that it couldn’t be discarded, but as time passed, I experienced it being discarded little by little and my mind disappearing little by little. I harbor the desire to work hard, complete all the Levels, become complete, and live happily.

💬 Story 2: “Getting closer to the peace and freedom I hoped for!”
By Jo Seong-hee / Age 54 / Level 1
If I had to choose between a bear and a tiger, I am closer to a tiger. If the ‘ji’ in danmuji (pickled radish) stands for ‘jigeuk’ (utmost sincerity), I’m on the side of doing ‘jiral’ (throwing a fit). Rather than sitting still and meditating, I would much rather shovel dirt all day. However, as I somehow endured the meditation and did the subtraction by sitting and standing, I felt a different kind of euphoria than before as I discarded all the remembered thoughts of my lived life. It really disappeared!
“Previously, I felt that life was hell, and I fully experienced that living with such a mind was no different from the punishment of hell. If you asked me what I want and pursue my whole life, it would be ‘freedom’.”
When I was young, living in a single-room house, I thought I would have no other wish if I just had a space to myself. But now, even while living in a 30-pyeong (approx. 1,000 sq ft) apartment, I was not free at all. When I started meditating, the only things I hoped for were peace and freedom.
And now, I am truly getting closer to great freedom and great peace. The method, the helpers, and the teachers with me! Thank you all.
