📖 Introduction

When many of us first seek out meditation, we come with a goal in mind: we want to gain peace, achieve success, or find happiness. But what if true freedom doesn’t come from gaining something new, but from completely discarding the things we already hold onto? Our expectations, greed, doubts, and attachments often create a heavy “human mind” that makes daily life painful and exhausting.

In this post, two practitioners share their eye-opening experiences with mind subtraction meditation. A 49-year-old shares her profound gratitude for discovering a method that allows her to discard her greed, ugliness, and human mind every single moment. Meanwhile, a 26-year-old discusses how he arrived at the meditation center with doubts and a desire to gain something, only to realize that true mental health and lightness come from emptying oneself completely—even letting go of the thrill of progress.

Read their inspiring stories to discover how letting go of your expectations and deeply embedded thoughts can bring true mental clarity and freedom.

💬 Story 1: “The method that lets me discard myself every moment”

By Park Jin-hee / Age 49 / Level 6

Clearly realizing the original mind again through this meditation, my mind and body feel like they could fly. I truly regret how hard and painful it is to live with a human mind, and that I couldn’t discard it even though it was trivial.

“I give thanks to the method that allows me to discard myself every moment, to discard my mind world, my ugliness, my evil deeds, my greed, and everything else.”

Thank you to all the helpers and trainee helpers who assisted me.

💬 Story 2: “With the thought, ‘I should at least check out what this meditation is’”

By Hong Gi-baek / Age 26 / Level 2

Doing Level 2 at the main center. At first, I had a lot of doubts. Questions like what I would gain by coming here, and why I had to come all the way here when I was doing it in my local area. Still, I thought, “Let’s try it. Shouldn’t I at least check out what it is?” With that mindset, I came to the main center last Saturday and started meditating.

Having come all the way here from my local area, I participated with the mind and greed to definitely gain something, but the instructor here said the exact opposite. They told me to focus on discarding myself and erasing my mind.

When I did Level 1, I participated with certain expectations and felt a bit of peace, so having come with a certain level of goal orientation, I felt a slight confusion. However, since I knew nothing and had never even tried to change myself, I decided to trust the method here and started eliminating things one by one. Looking back on my life 1 round, 2 rounds, over 10 rounds… I gradually realized that emptying oneself is not easy. The thought that discarding just one thing would be enough, or the thought that discarding just a little would make everything flow smoothly—I realized these were all illusions and that everything had to be discarded.

“As the fake things in my mind disappeared one by one, I felt my mind actually getting lighter, and I even felt a sense of thrill. Even so, they said discarding even this joyful feeling is doing it right, so I think this meditation is good for mental health.”

There are still remaining courses (Levels 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), and I plan to try it until the end. I won’t get happy when it goes well, nor depressed when I do poorly, and I will meditate until the day I can face everything without a mind.
