📖 Introduction

Have you ever started a new journey just to solve one specific problem, only to discover a profound inner transformation you never expected? For many, issues like mild insomnia drive them to try meditation without really knowing what it entails. At first, the process can feel difficult—sitting still for hours and facing your own cluttered thoughts can make you want to give up. But what happens when you decide to endure, push past the initial discomfort, and completely empty your mind?

In this post, a 63-year-old practitioner shares his honest, relatable journey with mind subtraction meditation. Coming to the center simply to cure his mild insomnia, he initially struggled with the practice and only kept going because he didn’t want to waste his time and money. However, by the fifth day, his endurance paid off, and he experienced an indescribable breakthrough: a mind as wide open as a newly created plaza, and a profound, quiet euphoria he had never felt before.

Read his inspiring story to discover how letting go of your thoughts can not only help you sleep, but also unlock an unexpected, static abundance of joy in your life.

💬 Story 1: “I came here because of mild insomnia without even knowing what it was”

By Koo Byung-hoe (Whale) / Age 63 / Level 1

When I came here without even knowing what it was because of (mild) insomnia, my mind was only filled with the thought of just solving my sleeping problem. Doing this meditation for several hours for the very first time, and especially doing it sitting down, was truly hard.

For the first few days it was just hard. Honestly, I decided to endure because it felt like a waste of time and money, and since I was already there, I thought I should focus. Although it was hard, I felt my mind changing somehow, and finally, on the 5th day, I felt an unknown joy. The joy, euphoria, and a certain static abundance that a living person feels—which I hadn’t felt until now—I faintly felt the possibility of.

“A feeling of my mind being refreshed, a feeling of being wide open, a feeling of becoming somewhat free, a feeling as if a large plaza was newly created in my mind, a feeling of relief, a feeling of the universe.”

Even though it’s hard, carrying the certainty that there must be an indescribable, quiet, and static joy in my life just from those feelings I experience momentarily, I think I will finish this meditation.

I thank the excellent helpers. When I go out into the world, my daily life awaits, so I might temporarily forget it, but where would that euphoria go? I wrote randomly.
