📖 Introduction
Have you ever felt like life is fundamentally unfair, or that you are carrying a burden heavier than anyone else’s? When we fall into a victim mentality, it is incredibly easy to blame the world, our circumstances, or the people around us for our unhappiness. We often harbor endless complaints, secretly believing we deserve special treatment or constant attention. But what happens when we realize that the expectations and delusions we hold in our own minds are the very things causing our suffering?
In this post, a 22-year-old practitioner shares her profound journey of self-reflection through mind subtraction meditation. After struggling with severe negative thoughts and what felt like a heavy mental illness, she entered the meditation center believing the world was to blame for her pain. However, by looking inward, she discovered that her own selfish desires, delusions, and demands for affection were the root of her struggles.
Read her inspiring story to discover how letting go of a victim mentality and emptying the mind can dramatically reduce your negative thoughts and bring true, lasting happiness.
💬 Story 1: “I had always thought it was all the world’s fault”
By Choi Yu-ra / Age 22 / Level 1
The first time I encountered this meditation was through a weekend camp (Teheran-ro). I had a lot of mental illnesses, unbefitting my age. So I think I came all the way from the New Mind Camp to the local center and then to the Main Center without hesitation. I had always lived with complaints, dissatisfaction, and a negative mind, but now having finished Level 1, I am truly grateful to the many pictures that made me suffer.
In the short time of one week at the Main Center, I felt and realized so much.
“I always thought I was the victim, that I alone lived a hard life, and that this was all the world’s fault. However, it was the bad mind I first consumed that grew and grew along with my daydreaming and delusions, tormenting me.”
Also, thinking I was a special existence unlike ordinary beings and therefore must always receive affection, attention, and love, I made the people around me suffer. When those expectations were not met, the disappointment tormented me as well.
Realizing I didn’t see others as they were but considered them as means to fulfill my desires, I also learned that I had lived a truly selfish life. Now that I’ve finished Level 1, my negative thoughts have decreased from 95 down to about 10.
Even though I’ve only finished Level 1, I am truly happy. I definitely want to reach completion and live happily together with the true mind of the world. Ah, and I thank the helpers who were with me and also the people I spent time with.
