A person happily drinking warm water in the morning after successfully breaking a bad habit

Welcome back to the Santa Clara Meditation blog! ๐ŸŒฑ

Bad habits are hard to fix, aren’t they? The mind formed by your innate temperament + the countless thoughts that created the habit.

As long as these two things exist, it’s overwhelming to build good habits and difficult to fix bad ones. Changing your innate temperament is not easy. It’s like someone with an ‘I’ (Introverted) MBTI struggling to live as an ‘E’ (Extroverted). Fixing behaviors that have hardened in your body over 30 to 40 years is also no easy task. That’s why anyone can experience a moment where a good habit theyโ€™ve successfully maintained for three years suddenly collapses in an instant due to lethargy, boredom, or extreme stress.

To fix bad habits, you have to deal with the mind formed by your innate temperament and the countless thoughts that built the habit, right? You just need to recall them and discard them according to the method. That method of discarding is Ma-eum Su-ryun meditation.

โœจ You Can Discard Bad Habits with Ma-eum Su-ryun Meditation!

Just like taking a sticky candy wrapper out of your pocket and throwing it into a trash can, you can discard bad habits through Ma-eum Su-ryun meditation. If you throw them away, they disappear!

Does discarding a habit sound unfamiliar? For those who are wondering, let me first explain what “discarding” means!

  • It doesn’t mean replacing it with another habit.
  • It also doesn’t mean forcibly suppressing the habit.
  • And it doesn’t mean you will do one good deed and then continue doing the bad habit.

๐ŸŒฑ Habits Stem From the Mind

Bad habits start from negative thoughts. It is said that a person makes about 200 choices a day. In those moments of choice, you act on the thought, “What’s the harm in just this once~”, and if you repeat that behavior yesterday, today, and tomorrow, it becomes a habit. You are discarding the mind (thought) that arises when you make that choice.

For example, if you listen to people who have a bad habit of eating late-night snacks or overeating when they aren’t even hungry, their reason is that they feel “empty.” We all know that late-night snacking is bad for our health! But the reason it’s so hard to fix is that the empty mind hasn’t been resolved. When night falls and things get quiet, the mind feels a void and wants to fill it.

Because they don’t know why they feel empty or what to fill it with, they try to soothe that hungry mind with the ‘act of eating.’ Because the void doesn’t actually get filled, they repeat it every night at 10 PM. If you find the cause of that empty mind within yourself and discard that mind through Ma-eum Su-ryun meditation, the habit of late-night snacking will disappear! Of course, this naturally takes time. โ˜๏ธ

๐Ÿ’ก Types of Bad Habits and Why You Must Discard Them

There are as many types of bad habits as there are people. Joachim Lรถw, the famous German football manager, became a global topic because of his “habit of picking his nose” whenever he got tense and nervous.

Besides this, there are:

  • The habit of eating late-night snacks ๐Ÿ”
  • The habit of biting your nails
  • The habit of swearing, yelling, or getting easily irritated ๐Ÿ˜
  • The habit of overeating
  • Habits of addiction to smoking or alcohol
  • The habit of wasting time โฑ๏ธ
  • The habit of blaming oneself while not being able to stand seeing others do well

Bad habits inflict fatal trauma on your life. If you get tense or your willpower drops in a situation that requires formality, you will experience an awkward situation. It’s not just Manager Joachim Lรถw’s nose-picking habit; we’ve all experienced something similar, right? ^^; You might get reflux esophagitis because of the habit of lying down right after eating, or put the people around you in an awkward spot because of a habit of getting angry when stressed. Behaviors that pop out unconsciously are often bad habits.

In order to live well. While we are awake, we are doing something. If you don’t engage in good behaviors, you will inevitably engage in behaviors that harm you, and those solidify into habits. If you don’t prepare and eat brown rice and a salad at home, you will end up eating fast food. If you don’t read a book, you will be staring at your smartphone during that time. Habits accumulate to eventually become your daily life, and if there are many bad habits in your daily life, your precious days will slowly be ruined. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ This Is How You Discard Bad Habits:

  • Write down the habit you want to fix. ๐Ÿ“
  • Look back at why that habit formed.
  • By looking back, you can find the cause yourself.
  • Discard that recalled mind according to the Ma-eum Su-ryun meditation method.
  • Set a specific time every day and discard the life you’ve lived and the mind where that habit formed more than 30 times a day.

โณ How Much Do I Have to Discard for a Bad Habit to Disappear?

It depends on how old the habit is, your temperament, and the number of times and time spent discarding. Naturally, the older the habit, the longer it takes. There is no magic trick where it suddenly changes after just one try~

Try doing it consistently for over 6 months! A 10-year ingrained habit of late-night snacking, an emotional habit of getting angry easily, or a habit of touching your hair when nervous will definitely disappear! โœจ

๐ŸŒป Fill the Space Where You Discarded Bad Habits with Good Habits!

Steps to create good habits instead of bad habits:

  1. There is a thought interfering with the good behavior. You discard that through meditation.
  2. Once the interfering mind is gone, doing the good behavior becomes easier.
  3. Do that behavior every day.
  4. A good habit is created.

Example: You made up your mind to drink 2 cups of warm water in the morning, but immediately, interfering thoughts wildly pop up, right? “Ugh, it’s so annoying to go to the kitchen to get water! Do I really have to drink it? It’s not like the effects will magically appear just because I drink it today… Maybe just for today I can skip… I can just drink it tomorrow lol. Do I really have to drink 2 cups? Maybe just one?”

When thoughts interfering with you arise like this, you discard this thought for about 5 minutes through Ma-eum Su-ryun meditation. Once you discard it, you can immediately take the action of going to drink water. You just need to do this good behavior at the same time every day. Even without writing it in a diary and checking it off, you will automatically drink warm water on an empty stomach. ^^

You know that drinking 2 cups of warm water on an empty stomach is important, but the distance between knowing it in your head and putting it into action is too far. It’s because of “that thought” that makes it hard to act! How would it be if thoughts making you hesitate about a good behavior didn’t arise? That’s right! It becomes easy to do that behavior.

“Globally successful CEOs or leaders have about 47% fewer bad habits compared to ordinary people.” โ€” David Niven

โ˜… If You Really Want to Fix Bad Habits! (Summary)

  1. Look at your bad habit proactively: Looking back at the life you’ve lived so far, find the reason why the bad habit formed yourself.
  2. Acknowledge it: Record things that come to mind: the trigger that led to the bad behavior, the reason you felt the behavior was good, the feeling at that time, the situation, the surrounding reactions, etc. Because habits are managed in the basal gangliaโ€”a brain region we cannot consciously perceiveโ€”acknowledging them is absolutely necessary.
  3. Discard the reflected mind: Discard the things you’ve recalled according to the Ma-eum Su-ryun meditation method!
  4. The bad habit disappears: Rather than forcibly holding it in, as the mind is discarded, the frequency of the bad habit will gradually decrease until it disappears entirely.
