📖 Introduction

Major life transitions, like early retirement, can often leave us feeling adrift. When the daily routine we’ve known for years suddenly disappears, it is easy to feel like life is plummeting without a clear direction. Everything becomes a bother, and the future feels uncertain. At the same time, when we search for new solutions to clear our minds, we often face doubts: Will this really work? Why do I have to do it this way?

In this post, two practitioners share how they navigated feelings of being lost and overcoming skepticism through mind subtraction meditation. A 50-year-old shares how a spontaneous decision to visit the meditation center after early retirement helped him find a new life direction and profound peace. Meanwhile, a 65-year-old discusses how immersing himself in intensive meditation cleared away his doubts about the practice, leading to deep self-reflection and humility.

Read their inspiring stories to discover how emptying your mind can help you overcome feelings of being lost, clear your doubts, and find a renewed sense of purpose.

💬 Story 1: “I came to the main center blindly after taking early retirement”

By Ju Chan-jung / Age 50 / Level 2

After taking early retirement from my company, I disliked everything and found everything bothersome. My life was endlessly plummeting, unable to find a direction on what to do and how to live. I blindly headed to the main center of this meditation. Knowing that emptying the mind first is the best way, I began to subtract exactly as the helper instructed.

“Although my meditation period has been short, I found peace of mind.”

However, feeling like I was subtracting the wrong way, I learned the correct method through personal training from the helper. As I understood the method of eliminating the wrong methods in my thoughts from the perspective of the entire universe, the subtraction went much smoother. I meditated with the right posture and felt something slipping away. If I have any questions or difficulties during the meditation process, I intend to receive counseling from the helper to escape from this fake mind.

💬 Story 2: “I had doubts about the repetitive method, but I clearly realized why”

By Kim Seok-eun / Age 65 / Level 2

I had completed Level 2 at the Sungkyunkwan University local center, but I participated because I felt the need for more certain and practical meditation. The gifts I received through meditating at the main center are…

  1. I was happy to meditate to my heart’s content in an intensive and highly focused meditation atmosphere.
  2. I realized that I was mean, ugly, and cunning. Along with the thought that I must be more humble towards a lower place, I realized the “inevitability” that I must mercilessly discard myself in order to discard my mind.

“Doubt before coming: I had doubts about the repetitive discarding method, but through this meditation, I clearly and naturally realized the reason for that method.”
