π Introduction
We all want to be loved and recognized, but sometimes that desire becomes an unquenchable thirst. When we secretly feel alienated or lonely, we might start demanding constant validation from our families, partners, and friends. We take their love for granted and only expect to receive, which ironically ends up pushing people away and ruining the very relationships we desperately want to keep.
In this post, a 20-year-old woman shares a very honest confession about her constant need for attention. Through the practice of mind subtraction, she was able to trace her attention-seeking behavior all the way back to a childhood sense of alienation.
Read her story to see how uncovering the hidden root of her loneliness allowed her to stop demanding love and finally start feeling genuine gratitude.
π¬ Story: π “Finding Out Why I Was Always Thirsty for Attention and Love”
By Yeonseo Kim / Age 20 / Level 1
Up until now, I unconsciously took the attention and love I received entirely for granted. However, all of those thoughts started from my inferiority complex of loneliness. Growing up in my extended family’s main house with my older brother and much younger sister, and being the only girl among about 10 cousins, I unknowingly felt a sense of alienation as I grew up. With that alienation, I made up my mind, ‘Since I am the only girl, and I am a lonely being, I must always receive more attention and love than anyone else.’
Therefore, my expectations for attention and love were high, and even though I had grandparents, parents, and an older brother who loved me very much, I was always starved for attention. Whether it was my mom cooking delicious food, my brother helping with homework, or my dad giving me an allowance, I just took it all for granted. The picture in my mind stamped with this terrible attitude also affected my interpersonal relationships.
“Naturally, I thought my friends had to validate me. I only expected things without giving anything in return. Because of that, my relationships with my friends inevitably kept falling apart.”
I only tried to receive and didn’t know how to give attention. Through meditation, I was able to look closely into my mind, and after realizing what the problem was, I gained a bit more confidence. I also developed a thankful heart toward the people around me. Thank you.
