📖 Introduction

It is easy to go through life believing we are doing our best, caring for others, or being the victim of our circumstances. When relationships fail or our surroundings feel suffocating, our first instinct is often to point the finger and ask, “Whose fault is this?” But what happens when we honestly look inside and realize that the root of our suffering was never the world around us, but our own minds?

In this post, two individuals share their powerful moments of self-reflection through mind subtraction. One successful teacher realized her underlying selfishness, while a young student discovered that her inferiority complex was the real reason she pushed her family away.

Read their honest stories to see how facing your true self and letting go of blame can bring profound inner peace.

💬 Story 1: 🍎 “Was I a Person Who Fit the Title of a Teacher?”

By Hyangnam Seo / Age 29 / Level 4

Looking back on my lived life, I realized that I am a truly selfish person. I thought I lived a good life, caring for others and being considerate, but everything was actually done for myself.

In particular, I began to feel remorse regarding the relationship between parents and children, and between students and teachers at school, and I realized what a truly flawed being I was. I shed many tears because I had done so much wrong to my mom, dad, siblings, friends, students, coworkers, and relatives, and I had no words to say.

“The title of a successful teacher in South Korea… it really doesn’t suit me. There were times when I wanted to study newly and live a new life.”

I had no idea I had so many thoughts… that I was overflowing with annoyance… that I had so many delusions… I could never have known this if it wasn’t for this method.

💬 Story 2: 🪞 “Realizing That What Makes Me Suffer is ‘Me'”

By Jiyeon Kim / Age 21 / Level 1

I first learned about this meditation through my dad’s introduction. I was tired of the exact same daily routine, but I also had constant troubles with my family. It seemed like wherever I went, the atmosphere would go bad just by me being there, so I couldn’t get along well. As I searched for the reason and cause inside my family, I ended up blaming everything on others.

Honestly, even while meditating, I had countless thoughts like, ‘Is this working? Am I doing this right?’ My dad, who is closest to me, told me until his mouth went dry that this works, but it didn’t really resonate with me. However, during this one week, as I looked back on my life and discarded, I realized that I was the cause of everything. I felt so ashamed and hated myself enough to want to beat myself up. And I was a mass of inferiority complex.

“To protect and shield myself, thinking ‘Whose fault is all this?’ and ‘If they hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t be like this,’ I was pushing others away. I discovered that version of me.”

It was amazing to see something I doubted actually happen. When I first came, and for the first few days, the thought of wanting to go home constantly tormented me, but that’s not the case anymore. Now that I realize that what makes me suffer is ‘me’, I think I will no longer obsess over anything.
