🌱 The Power of a Selfless Mind in Leadership

When we think of a powerful leader, we often picture someone who stands above others, giving orders with unyielding authority. However, true leadership—the kind that moves hearts and brings people together—comes from a completely different place. At our meditation center, we find that the greatest influence naturally emerges when you empty your mind of ego and sincerely serve others.
To explore what people truly desire in a leader today, let’s look at one of South Korea’s most respected figures: the “Nation’s MC,” Yoo Jae-suk. 🎤
This past May, the legendary variety show Infinite Challenge held an “election to pick the next-generation leader to guide the next 10 years.” In the wake of the Sewol ferry tragedy, a profound public thirst for a true leader, coupled with the local elections, brought immense attention to the “Infinite Challenge Choice 2014” national vote. Over 450,000 people participated, and ultimately, candidate Yoo Jae-suk defeated Noh Hong-chul and Jung Hyung-don to be elected.
Yoo Jae-suk had already been in long-term power on the show for nearly 10 years—so how was he able to succeed in his re-election? Here are the five qualifications of a leader desired by this era, as demonstrated by Yoo Jae-suk.
🤲 1. Becoming a Servant: A Heart that Sincerely Serves
The election process was conducted similarly to real political elections. The promotional video made by Yoo Jae-suk’s camp parodied the highly discussed drama Secret Love Affair.
- Kim Young-chul: “What did you say your name was?”
- Yoo Jae-suk: “I am a servant (Ha-in). Yoo Ha-in.” (Lol)
Amidst the hilarious video, Yoo Jae-suk delivered a final, sincere message: “I will not lose my original intention, always be prepared, and even after 10, 20, or 30 years, I will dedicate this body to making you laugh as the unchanging servant of the viewers.”
He actually went to a public bathhouse and scrubbed the backs of citizens diligently while asking for their votes! His attitude didn’t feel like a one-off PR event; it showed genuine sincerity to serve. Even with his cast members, he never tries to reign over them. He sincerely cares for each one and helps them unleash their potential.
This is the ultimate example of servant leadership—serve them sincerely first, and you will become a true leader respected by them.
🧭 2. Back to Basics in a Crisis: Clear Principles & Conviction
During the election debates, the cast discussed a recent viewership ratings crisis. While various sensational countermeasures were proposed, Yoo Jae-suk shared words worthy of a leadership quote book. He reminded everyone that the alternative to a crisis is returning to the basics, and the foundation of their show is laughter.
“The real crisis is not knowing it’s a crisis when it is one. Do you know what a bigger crisis is? Knowing it’s a crisis and doing nothing is an even bigger crisis… We talk about viewership ratings. Of course, ratings are really important. But our goal should not be ratings. Our goal is laughter. That is the fundamental thing our show must protect.”
When another candidate suggested a radical pledge to reveal their private family lives for ratings, Yoo Jae-suk firmly pushed back:
“Doing the easy thing right in front of us is not a challenge.”
He knows the core value of the program. With clear principles and convictions, he presents the right direction to move forward.
🌱 3. Unchanging Beginner’s Mind: Willing to Take the First Beating
Many viewers supported the other candidates out of a thirst for something new. Nevertheless, Yoo Jae-suk succeeded due to the infinite trust he had built over the past 10 years through constant self-management and an unchanging beginner’s mind.
The very first thing Yoo Jae-suk did after winning was to address a recent controversy caused by one of their episodes. Apologizing sincerely and bowing his head to viewers who felt uncomfortable, he, as the leader, was the first to receive a traditional flogging (gonjang) on TV to atone for the mistake.
A person who keeps his promises and takes responsibility for his team’s mistakes naturally embodies the conditions of an irreplaceable leader.
🤝 4. “Ours,” Not “Mine”
“Things weren’t working out, and Jae-suk hyung looked right at my face and said, ‘Hey, do you think just anyone becomes a star?’ At that moment, I felt so hurt. But as he turned around, he muttered something you could barely hear. ‘Hey. But there is no law saying that star can’t be you.’ That gave me so much strength.” — Jung Hyung-don
While Infinite Challenge might have felt like a one-man show at first, gradually, all the other members found their footing and showcased their unique comedic styles. All the members acknowledge that this was thanks to Yoo Jae-suk, who didn’t cling to the “Number One” spot but made an effort to bring out the unique traits of everyone else.
During his acceptance speech, he didn’t just celebrate his own win; he embraced the campaign pledges of all the other members. A person who tries to create collective success rather than personal glory commands deep respect.

A leader who always respects and communicates with a warm heart, but also possesses the cool-headed charisma to provide direction, maintain balance, and lead strongly.
In the book Compelling People: The Hidden Qualities That Make Us Influential, which analyzes great figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Oprah Winfrey, it states that only those equipped with both strength and warmth rise to the top. They seem willing to step up for our interests (warmth) and capable of doing so (strength).
