💡 INTRODUCTION

Master Woo Myung examines a beautiful and well-known poem by a Chinese monk, using it to illustrate the critical difference between partial and absolute enlightenment. The monk poetically strives to emulate the peace of the green mountain, the simplicity of the blue sky, and the flow of water and wind. However, Master Woo Myung points out that trying to be like nature implies that the self and nature are still separate entities. True, absolute enlightenment is not about imitating the universe; it is the profound realization that you and all of nature are fundamentally one and the same.

📖 EXCERPT FROM “WHAT DOES THE FOLLOWING POEM MEAN?” BY MASTER WOO MYUNG

“This poem was written by a Chinese monk, and it means that nature is man, and man is nature. Although it may seem in the poem that he knew that nature is him, he did not achieve full or absolute enlightenment. […]

He still had some self remaining because he was not able to see that he is one with the green mountain, the blue sky, the wind, and the water. In other words, he tried to emulate nature which he thought was separate from himself, and he did not truly know that nature is him. […]

When one achieves absolute enlightenment, he will know that all things, just as they are, are himself.”

🌱 REFLECT AT SANTA CLARA MEDITATION

We often look to nature as a source of peace, wishing we could be as still as a mountain or as free as the wind. But as long as we hold onto the false self, we will always feel separate from that natural harmony. At Santa Clara Meditation, we guide you past the desire to merely act peaceful. By completely discarding your personal conceptions and the illusion of separation, you can achieve absolute enlightenment. When you ride your Stumpjumper through the hills or care for the trees in your yard, you will no longer feel like a separate observer trying to emulate nature—you will realize that the mountain, the sky, the wind, and you are all exactly the same true existence. ✨
