📖 Introduction
Many parents carry a heavy, silent burden of guilt. Whether it stems from having to leave a young child with relatives due to work, or watching that child struggle with social relationships later in life, the guilt can easily morph into deep frustration. We take our children to counseling, desperately trying to “fix” their issues, all while secretly resenting them for bruising our pride when they fall short of our expectations. We ask ourselves in despair, “Why did I have children just to suffer like this?” But what if the child’s struggle isn’t actually their problem, but a reflection of the rigid mold we are trying to force them into?
In this post, a 47-year-old mother shares an incredibly brave and honest reflection on her parenting journey. After struggling with infertility, experiencing the joy of having twins, and then enduring years of guilt, resentment, and failed counseling attempts for her son, she finally discovered the root of the issue.
Read her touching story to see how discarding a parent’s rigid expectations and learning true acceptance can heal a broken family dynamic.
💬 Story: 🕊️ “It Wasn’t My Son’s Problem, But My Problem”
By Autumn Wind / Age 47 / Level 7
Living my life, there was an unknown emptiness and hollowness. Being alone was more comfortable than mingling with people, and I lived a life with more interest in nature, animals, and plants. I had the first love marriage in the family, but we couldn’t have a child, which made my parents constantly worry. Pregnant women felt so enviable to me, and relying on what they call the power of science, we had twins.
Thinking it was a gift from heaven, but burdened with having to work, we left our eldest, our son, with my in-laws who offered to raise him. We brought him back after 15 months and raised them together. As the twins grew and entered elementary school, I seriously began to worry due to interpersonal relationships. When my son struggled, everything was my fault, and I even felt guilt for not raising him myself.
So I made efforts, taking him to counseling, but it wasn’t easily resolved. The gift from heaven ultimately led me to regret, wondering why I had children to suffer like this and why such a child was born to me. The always-lacking son scratched my pride and I resented him.
“While meditating at the recommendation of my child’s middle school homeroom teacher, I realized that everything was not my son’s problem but my problem, and I began to see my own state. I had tried to fit my son into my mind’s mold, never once looked at him just as he was, and didn’t know how to accept him.”
My son became the condition that allowed me to continue meditating. I thought the study dealing with the human mind was the best study, so I had studied counseling a lot outside my major, but it was all in vain.
“Through meditation, I learned acceptance and a grateful heart. I bow my head before the providence of the great universe that brought me here.”
I thank everyone who helped me like this, and thanking you again, I pledge only to be able to finish this mind study to the end. Thank you.
