For decades, the educational paradigm has been dominated by a rigid structure centered almost entirely on entrance exams, grades, and building the perfect resume. In this high-pressure environment, the vital value of “character education” is frequently pushed to the back burner.
However, a shift is happening. A feature published by the Joongdo Ilbo highlights how character education is harmonizing with mind subtraction meditation and moving back to the center of the educational field. To explore this, the Society of Human Completion Education hosted a major academic conference to present empirical research and real-world success stories.
Here is a look at how meditation is providing the answers that modern education desperately needs.
π« The 2017 Autumn Academic Conference
Sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the 2017 Autumn Academic Conference was held at the KAIST KI Building in Daejeon. The event, titled ‘Character Education, Finding the Answer in Meditation’, drew significant attention from both academic and educational circles.
The conference focused heavily on two recent educational initiatives: the free school year system in middle schools and character education within university liberal arts courses. Scholars, professors, and frontline teachers gathered to share research papers and practical outcomes of integrating meditation into these programs.
π‘ Expert Insights and Real-World Cases
The event opened with welcoming remarks from KAIST Professor Lee Duk-joo and featured a robust lineup of educational experts sharing empirical evidence of meditation’s effectiveness:
- The Keynote: Professor Kim Sung-chul of Dongguk University Gyeongju Campus delivered the keynote speech on ‘Meditation and Character Education’, laying the philosophical and practical groundwork for the day.
- Middle School Success: Principal Lee Kang-il of Cheonan Ipjang Middle School explained the broad positive effects of introducing meditation into the free semester system. This was backed by an empirical case study from Teacher Ha Mi-jin of Bansong Middle School, who operated a highly successful ‘Mind Subtraction Meditation Education’ program.
- Growing Together: In a special lecture, Teacher Lee Oh-nam of Hongseong Guhang Elementary School shared an inspiring presentation titled ‘Accidental Meditation, Meeting Happiness: Meditation Education Where Teachers and Students Grow Together’.
- Scientific Proof: Professor Yoon Mi-ra of Chung-Ang University’s Department of Nursing presented a compelling research paper detailing the measurable effects of school-based meditation education across both middle schools and universities.
π± A New Model for Education
Professor Lee Duk-joo of KAIST’s Department of Aerospace Engineering highlighted the importance of these gatherings, stating:
“The need for scientific research on the effects of meditation is growing. I hope this academic conference will serve as an opportunity to spread such discussions and raise interest in alternative character education.”
The Society of Human Completion Education continues to steadily seek implementation plans for practicing character and Human Completion education in the school environment. By combining rigorous academic research with on-the-ground practice, they are building a new, healthier model for society.
