📖 Introduction
Financial hardship can change a family overnight.
When money problems arise, the emotional impact often extends far beyond finances. Relationships become strained, communication breaks down, and family members silently carry burdens that others may never fully understand.
Children may blame their parents.
Parents may blame themselves.
And little by little, emotional distance grows within the family.
This meditation testimonial shares the story of Yeon-hee H., a college student whose family experienced severe financial hardship after her father suffered a major loss as a loan guarantor.
For years, resentment, disappointment, and misunderstanding stood between a daughter and her father.
But through meditation, their family slowly found healing, understanding, gratitude, and a renewed sense of connection.
Today, the father who once carried guilt and despair wears a smile again.
And his daughter finally sees him not through resentment, but through gratitude and respect.
💬 “Everything Was Dad’s Fault”
By Yeon-hee H. | College Student
I think it was around middle school when everything changed.
After my father made a bad decision as a loan guarantor, our family’s financial situation suddenly became very difficult.
The peaceful atmosphere in our home disappeared almost overnight.
Thankfully, we did not lose everything.
But we had to move into a smaller home.
And my father spent several years living far away from us while working to support the family.
Even before that happened, I never particularly liked my father’s blunt personality.
He was a typical father from the Gyeongsang region—quiet, direct, and not very expressive.
But after our financial problems began, I blamed him for everything.
I believed:
“This is all Dad’s fault.”
The financial struggles.
The arguments between my parents.
The tension inside our home.
I blamed him for all of it.
💔 Ashamed of My Father and Ashamed of My Family
When my father occasionally came home, we barely spoke.
It felt as if he was not really part of the household anymore.
Looking back now, I think he blamed himself deeply for what happened.
He always looked exhausted.
Thin.
Depressed.
Sometimes I felt sorry for him.
But at that age, I was too immature and too focused on my own pride.
I felt embarrassed whenever friends asked about my family situation.
I felt ashamed of our struggles.
And because of that shame, I often treated my father coldly.
Whenever he spoke to me, I answered sharply.
Sometimes I ignored him completely.
When my parents argued, I would shut myself in my room and refuse to deal with any of it.
At the time, I never considered how much pain my father might have been carrying.
🌱 The First Person Who Changed Was My Father
Around the time I entered high school, a relative introduced my father to this meditation.
After practicing for several months, something surprising happened.
His face began changing.
The sadness that had always been there seemed to disappear.
He looked brighter.
Lighter.
More peaceful.
Without saying much, he began helping around the house.
He cleaned.
Did laundry.
Washed dishes.
Took care of small household tasks without being asked.
Most importantly, he no longer seemed trapped by the burden he had carried for years.
I could feel that he had overcome something deep within himself.
🏡 The Walls Inside Our Family Began to Fall
My father never lectured us about meditation.
He simply changed.
And somehow, his peacefulness affected the entire family.
Eventually, all of us began practicing meditation.
As I reflected on my own mind, I gradually began seeing my father differently.
For years, I had only looked at things from my own perspective.
But now I began thinking about what he must have experienced.
He had worked honestly his entire life.
Then suddenly lost everything because of a loan guarantee.
He must have felt devastated.
He must have felt responsible.
He must have carried tremendous guilt.
And because he did not want to burden his family, he endured that suffering alone.
When I realized that, tears came to my eyes.
I felt so sorry.
So ashamed.
While he was struggling the most, I had only added to his pain.
💙 Learning to Understand My Father’s Heart
I realized something painful.
I had ignored almost everything my father ever said.
I pretended not to hear him.
I pretended not to understand him.
And worst of all, I had been ashamed of the very person who had devoted his life to supporting our family.
When I saw that clearly, I felt deeply ashamed of myself.
For the first time, I began appreciating the sacrifices my father had made.
Not because anyone told me to.
But because I could finally see them.
🚕 No Matter How Tired He Is, Dad Always Smiles
Today, my father works as a taxi driver.
His back is not healthy.
Yet he often works from early morning until the next morning without rest.
Even when he briefly comes home to eat, he never complains.
He never talks about how tired he is.
Instead, he smiles.
He jokes around.
He washes dishes.
He cleans the house.
He helps wherever he can before leaving for work again.
Even from my perspective, he is amazing.
My mother often says:
“The old version of your father could never have handled work this difficult.”
But somehow, he does it with gratitude.
And he does it with a smile.
👨👧 My Father Became My Friend
These days, whenever I talk to my father, his answer is almost always the same.
“Okay.”
No anger.
No criticism.
No pressure.
Just acceptance.
He feels more like a friend than a parent.
He is kind.
Reliable.
Strong.
And incredibly warm.
The father I once avoided is now someone I deeply respect.
Someone I admire.
Someone I am proud to call my father.
🌟 “Dad, Thank You”
There is something I want to say to my father.
Something I could never have said in the past.
“Dad, our family is truly blessed to have found this meditation.”
“Thank you for always smiling.”
“Thank you for never giving up, no matter how difficult life became.”
“Thank you for working so hard for our family.”
“Let’s continue living happily together.”
“I love you.”
🌿 When One Person Changes, An Entire Family Can Change
This family’s story began with financial hardship, resentment, blame, and emotional distance.
But it did not end there.
As one person changed, the atmosphere of the entire family changed.
Misunderstanding became understanding.
Resentment became gratitude.
Distance became connection.
Today, a daughter who once blamed her father for everything now sees him with admiration and love.
And a father who once carried guilt and despair now smiles again.
Sometimes the greatest healing begins not when circumstances change—but when the heart changes first.
