📖 Introduction

For many young adults, the transition into the real world is accompanied by a storm of endless thoughts, intense obsessions, and overwhelming stress. Whether it is the pressure of finishing college or the emotional toll of daily anxieties, being trapped in a self-centered mind can lead to physical illness, nightmares, and a deep sense of frustration. We often try to hold onto our thoughts and relationships tighter, but what if the secret to true joy is actually letting go?

In this post, two young practitioners share how they discovered that true happiness comes from emptying themselves. A 25-year-old college senior shares how he broke the exhausting chain of endless thoughts and realized that overcoming a self-centered life is the ultimate key to happiness. Meanwhile, a 22-year-old shares how stepping into meditation—initially just to see her boyfriend—cured her of stress-induced illness, nightmares, and heavy obsessions, opening her eyes to the joy of the universe mind.

Read their inspiring stories to discover how emptying yourself of unnecessary thoughts and obsessions can lead to true inner peace and profound happiness.

💬 Story 1: “Realizing that life’s happiness lies in emptying myself”

By Min-gu / Age 25 / Level 1

I usually have many thoughts and a lot of obsession, so I started doing this meditation. Becoming a senior in college, I strongly felt that it was very hard to break the chain of thoughts, which made me want to do it even more, so I did it in the second semester of my senior year and practiced at a local center for a month. After that, as soon as I finished college, I came straight to the Main Center.

For the first two days, I couldn’t focus well and it was hard, but from the third and fourth days, the speed of looking back at myself started to pick up, and Thursday and Friday went well.

“It felt like the inside of my mind opened up, and it seemed like I could somewhat embrace myself and the world. I came to realize a bit that life’s happiness does not lie in a self-centered life, but in overcoming a self-centered life and emptying myself…”

Though I still have a long way to go, I wanted to overcome my self-centeredness. There are still undiscarded parts and parts I obsess over deep in my mind, but as I continue to live, I want to discard, empty them, and expand my consciousness.

💬 Story 2: “I am thankful to my boyfriend who let me join in mind subtraction”

By Lim Hye-in / Age 22 / Level 1

Before starting Level 1, I participated in the New Mind Camp. The reason I participated in the New Mind Camp was simply to come see my boyfriend who was doing this meditation at the Main Center. However, during that short 2-day, 1-night period, I felt I needed to do this meditation and entered the Main Center.

On the first day, even sitting was too hard, and I was full of thoughts of wanting to go to my room and rest. Up until about Tuesday, I struggled with the continuous practice. As days passed by, those thoughts and difficulties disappeared, and on Thursday, I experienced a whole new world. The mind of the universe. It was an inexpressible joy.

“Actually, before coming here, my body had gotten sick from tens of thousands of agonies and stress, so I lived feeling like I was just enduring day by day. Sometimes I even thought I wanted to stop living and suffered from nightmares every single day.”

Now that I have done mind subtraction, my mind has emptied and become comfortable beyond imagination regarding my obsession with the person I love, resentment towards someone, and anxiety about the future. I feel thankful to my boyfriend who didn’t do the subtraction practice alone but let me participate too, and I want to highly recommend it to many people. I will do this meditation until the end. Thank you.
