📖 Introduction
Many of us go through life believing that if we can just “control” our minds, we will be perfectly fine. We push down difficult memories, brush off old regrets, and keep moving forward. However, sheer self-control doesn’t actually erase the past. Over decades, those suppressed thoughts can quietly accumulate, acting like hidden time bombs of sadness, regret, and lamentation just waiting to go off.
In this post, a 70-year-old man shares a profound realization about his own lifelong mental habits. Discovering that self-control wasn’t enough, he faced the daunting task of emptying seven decades of accumulated memories. Rather than feeling frustrated by the sheer volume of his past, he approached the process with incredible grace, patience, and gratitude.
Read his beautiful reflection to see how taking the time to systematically discard a long life of memories can finally create true room in the mind.
💬 Story: 🕰️ “My Life Has Been Long, There Are Many Remembered Thoughts”
By Lim Young-rae / Age 70 / Level 1
I was recommended this meditation by people around me, but I had lived thinking that if I just control my mind as I live, it would be an alright life. I always had a favorable impression of this meditation, so I entered and listened to the instructor’s lecture.
“There are suppressed thoughts in the thoughts remembered from my life, and they are stored as bombs that can turn into sadness, regret, and lamentation at any time. They said that by discarding the remembered thoughts of my life, my mind will gain room, leading to a smooth and happy life.”
While doing this meditation, I diligently discarded remembered thoughts. In consultation, the instructor told me to find and discard more, so I discarded more for an hour. In another consultation, the instructor told me to find and discard even more thoroughly, so I tried doing that for 2 hours.
On the last day, I couldn’t pass Level 1. As I tried to meditate in the afternoon, rather than feeling disappointed about not passing Level 1, I felt that because my life has been long, there are many remembered thoughts, and I lack the quickness to find and discard them.
I thought that even in this situation, I need to discard again even harder. I sincerely thank the instructor and other assistant instructors for their thorough, sincere, and planned lectures so that space can be created in the mind corresponding to what has been discarded.
