Welcome to Santa Clara Meditation! 🧘♀️ In our fast-paced modern lives, it is easy to let human relationships slip through the cracks or become a source of stress rather than comfort. How do we cultivate connections that last for decades, weathering life’s storms with grace and gratitude?
In this reflective piece, we explore the profound life lessons hidden within the heartwarming Korean reality show, the “Over Flowers” series. 📺 By observing the natural, unguarded interactions of long-time friends traveling together, we uncover four beautiful secrets to building true, lasting human relationships. We hope these insights inspire you to reflect on your own connections and discover the peace that comes from letting go of expectations and embracing genuine togetherness. ✨
One day, I was absentmindedly watching the first episode of Grandpas Over Flowers on the subway. 🚇 I didn’t expect much, thinking, “What’s the big deal about old grandpas going on a backpacking trip?” But the first episode ended so quickly. “Why is the running time so short?” I thought, lifting my head, only to realize I had passed my stop a long time ago. 😅
It was so entertaining that I couldn’t take my eyes off it until the episode finished. I was strangely drawn into the mysterious charm of the grandpas and Lee Seo-jin.
Watching the Over Flowers series, it’s not just fun; it also brings an inexplicable sense of comfort. ☕ It feels like an oasis in a busy daily life. 🏝️ The theme of travel itself fulfills people’s romanticized desire to “escape reality,” but there was something more special than that. Producer Na Young-seok’s excellent directing definitely played a part, but I felt the essence of this entertainment was the “comfort” that naturally arises between people.
I was truly envious watching them. Their friendship. I wondered, “How could they stay friends for 50 years?” 🕰️ The grandpas showed a chemistry of a “50-year friendship” that is hard to even imagine. The Youth Over Flowers cast—Yoon Sang, Lee Juck, and Yoo Hee-yeol—also showed the naturalness of a long “20-year” friendship. It was fascinating. Were there no hurdles along the way? Was it easy to maintain a friendship with an unchanging heart? ❤️
As I kept watching, I felt like I was getting a glimpse into the secrets of long-lasting human relationships. I’d like to share a little bit of the secrets I noticed, thinking, “This must be why they could maintain their friendship for so long.” 📝
🍂 Secret 1. Letting Go of Expectations
Just watching the grandpas walk through the alleys of Paris, you can feel their wisdom and experience. 🥖 It’s the kind of experience that younger people can’t attain no matter how hard they try. You could call that experience a consistent sense of composure in any situation. That relaxed demeanor melts seamlessly into the friendship between the grandpas.
“Hey, are you only going to contact me when I die? Just give me a call sometimes!” 📞
Grandpa Soon-jae scolded his younger friends. But somehow, there were no thorns in his words. Rather than speaking out of genuine disappointment, he seemed relaxed enough to use even his own death as a subject for a joke. At the same time, he didn’t seem to have high expectations of his younger friends. Rather than scolding them with the genuine expectation that they would call, he seemed to have reached a level where he easily brushed off such “trivial” emotions like expecting something from someone and getting disappointed. 😌
The younger grandpas are at a similar level. Even after being nagged, they don’t walk on eggshells or pretend to be sorry. They just smile calmly. Perhaps the word “death” diluted the weight of telling them to call. However, within that calmness, there’s a deep affection that says, “Just stay healthy.” 🌱 They just ask about each other’s health and hope to be together happily for a long time; beyond that, they don’t seem to want anything else. You can’t even feel any uncomfortable tension of feeling sorry or walking on eggshells for not keeping in touch.
Is that why it’s so comfortable? Being thankful just for being next to each other without expectations, disappointment, or tension. 🙏 You can feel the warmth in the grandpas’ demeanor. Knowing each other so well, they don’t expect too much or get overly disappointed, understanding each other deeply. The sincere hearts radiating from that dynamic warm the hearts of the viewers as well. I think this is the essence of the warmth felt in the Grandpas Over Flowers series, and perhaps the essence of all human relationships.
As we live, we expect many things from others. Whether it’s friends, lovers, or family. Usually, they are trivial things. However, these trivial expectations and disappointments pile up, and our feelings toward the other person can sour. 🌧️ Then, we resign from the relationship, saying, “Sigh, I just shouldn’t expect anything.” But resignation does not lead to healthy relationship development. “Giving up expectations and desires” isn’t the only solution.
The key to a healthy human relationship is “being thankful” for the other person. 💖 The grandpas are always thankful. They are thankful to their younger and older brothers for being by their side, and they are always thankful to their porter, Lee Seo-jin. They tell him he did a good job. Perhaps this mindset of knowing how to be thankful just for someone being by your side is the most important element in long-lasting human relationships.
🗣️ Secret 2. A Little Bit of Honesty
There was also the Youth cast, who showed chemistry matching the grandpas’ 50-year friendship. The combination of Yoo Hee-yeol, Lee Juck, and Yoon Sang represents Korea’s 40-something youth. Despite their relatively young age of 40 (they are children compared to the grandpas, haha 😂), I felt the same comfort from this youth cast that I felt from the grandpas.
Why was that? It wasn’t like they were at an age close to death. Watching the broadcast, the youth cast often walks on eggshells around each other. Yoon Sang, despite being the oldest, grumbles. The youngest, Lee Juck, is busy taking care of his older brothers instead. 🧳
They didn’t have any major complaints about each other, but as time passed, minor conflicts arose over very trivial things like picking accommodations or choosing meals. 🍽️ An icy atmosphere sometimes flowed due to differences in opinion. In these uncomfortable situations, they could have easily just covered it up and pretended everything was fine, but I saw the youth cast handling it wisely instead.
They approached each other with a little bit of honesty. And later, they had heart-to-heart talks. 💬 When dissatisfaction arose in their relationship, they didn’t draw a line and give up on getting closer. Instead, they tried to step a little closer. In doing so, they came to understand each other’s pain. By sharing their own stories and pain a bit more honestly, the youth grew much closer.
As a result, the impression I got from the youth cast throughout the series was that they were like “brothers living in the same house.” 🏡 Not a formal or obligatory relationship, but the kind where you can comfortably show your true self. Don’t you think this unreserved human relationship was possible because of a little bit of honesty?
As we get to know people, there are moments when dissatisfaction builds up and it becomes difficult to be honest. It could be because of our pride, or because it’s bothersome, so we just end up maintaining a relationship at a safe distance. 📏 However, if you make the effort to approach them just a tiny bit—just 10 centimeters—with honesty first, that distance can close dramatically. Even if you feel like you are losing out in the moment, being just a little bit honest can make your relationship with the other person much stronger. 💪
There is nothing more valuable than that.
🌳 Secret 3. A Little Bit of Effort
It seems like there are more and more cases where human relationships end easily these days. There are many instances where people just turn their backs, thinking, “I just won’t see them anymore.” 🚶♂️💨 If it’s bothersome, they don’t reach out; if someone hurts them even a little, they avoid them. Because of this, the 20-year and 50-year friendships shown in the Over Flowers series feel even more precious. It’s because it’s so rare nowadays. Maintaining a long-term relationship with someone is not an easy task.
Is the reason we feel “comfort” in the friendships of the Over Flowers series because we can see deep roots that won’t shake even in strong winds, unlike those easily disposable relationships? 🌬️
It seems nothing in this world becomes solid without effort. Human relationships are the same. A long-lasting human relationship cannot exist without relentless effort. 🛠️ Come to think of it, to maintain a relationship for decades, there must have been many big and small efforts. The effort to stop for 10 seconds and think from the other person’s perspective, even when angry or disappointed. The effort to bend your own stubbornness instead of insisting, “Only I am right.” The effort to sincerely say, “I’m really sorry.”
Isn’t this what a true human relationship is? A relationship where you let go of yourself a little bit and make an effort to acknowledge and understand each other’s differences. 🤝 An old relationship isn’t necessarily a true human relationship, but the longer that friendship lasts, the deeper these efforts are carved like tree rings, establishing sturdy roots. 🌲 Because without relentless effort, the hearts between people can easily drift apart.
🫂 Secret 4. The Desire to Be Together
Lastly, watching the grandpas and the youth cast gives the feeling of a relationship that is meant to “be together.” Not a relationship where they formally try and make an effort just because they have to get along, but a relationship where they have been together in the past and are still together now. ⏳
They always say thank you to each other just for being by their side. They say they are glad they could come on the trip together. ✈️ They say that sharing this journey with these people is what makes them the happiest. They say traveling together and making memories together is the most valuable thing to them. 📸
Who do you want to “be together” with right now? 🌟
