Life
A man on a path halts and hesitates;
he looks tired, weary from walking.
The man on the path continues and hurries onwards
but even if he reaches his destination,
there is nothing for him to gain.
It makes no difference whether or not he achieves his end,
but ignorant of heaven’s will, all he does is sigh.
Just as a refugee longs for home;
just as a nursing baby longs for his mother;
all people live dreaming of an ideal world.
They may even believe that
the ideal world exists in the dream,
but though they long for it
like a refugee or a nursing baby,
I hold the key to that world.
Although life has homesickness,
since man can neither see it nor find it,
heaven has come to show him.
All creations, all things, are silent when they come into the world,
and they leave it just as silently,
Where have the heroes of the past gone?
Only stories of them handed down through the years remain.
People live within time,
but they are fooled by the moment,
and repeatedly live lives that do not remain.
And yet, they claim to be clever.
It is life and it is all creations –
those who talk and brag,
the miserly and the great –
they all eventually turn silent
and disappear.
