Elementary school children participating in a classroom meditation session for emotional wellness

โœจ Nurturing Children’s Emotional Stability on a Global Scale

The movement to support children’s emotional well-being is crossing borders! In South Korea, Ma-eum Su-ryun (Mind Subtraction) meditation is already a staple in many public schools, operating as a regular subject, a creative activity, and a highly successful free-semester program. But the need for character development and mental peace isn’t limited to one countryโ€”it is a universal necessity for growing youth.

Recently, this powerful meditation method drew significant attention as it took center stage at an elementary school in the United States. Let’s take a look at how 5th graders in New Jersey are learning to clear their minds and build emotional resilience! ๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿฉบ Celebrating Health & Wellness Week in the US

Across the United States, “Health & Wellness Week” is a dedicated school health initiative implemented in elementary, middle, high schools, and universities. It is a special week focused on providing intensive education on various holistic health topics outside of regular academics, helping students build healthier, happier lifestyles.

In celebration of this event, Cliffside Park School #5 in New Jersey decided to prioritize mental health by hosting a special Mind Subtraction meditation class for their 5th-grade students.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Drawing, Writing, and Discarding Stress

Supported by the Palisades Park (PalPark) Meditation Center, the 45-minute class was held on a Wednesday and attended by 25 enthusiastic 5th graders.

The session was led by Instructor Lauren Guss, a dedicated meditation expert who serves as an international committee member of the Academic Society for Human Completion and works as a registered nurse at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, NJ.

Lauren brilliantly tailored the meditation principles to be easily understood by 10- and 11-year-olds. She guided the children through a hands-on, relatable practice:

  1. Identify the Burden: The students were asked to express the heavy thoughts, worries, and stress they wanted to get rid of by drawing pictures or writing them down.
  2. Practice Subtraction: They then engaged in the practical, focused method of throwing those minds away.

Even after just a brief 45-minute practice, the transformation was undeniable. The children successfully broke free from their immediate mental stress and appeared noticeably brighter and lighter. The homeroom teacher who observed the session expressed deep satisfaction and immense gratitude for the positive results.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ A Growing Movement for Families

Instructor Lauren, who generously donates her talent to guide meditation at the PalPark Center, shared that this school event is part of a much larger, growing movement on the East Coast:

“Currently, eight meditation centers in New York and New Jersey are jointly conducting a youth meditation program once a month. Each center has children practicing meditation alongside their parents, and parents who have tried meditation understand that it is crucial in forming their children’s character.”

True health isn’t just about physical fitness; it is about cultivating a resilient, peaceful, and unburdened mind from a young age. Whether you are in New Jersey, South Korea, or right here in California, the principles of letting go remain exactly the same.
