A Talk with a Star
• It is good to see you, star!
Star: I am very happy to see you!
• Star, when were you created?
Star: I was created a long, long time ago.
• Have many people come and gone from the world?
Star: Yes. Many, many people have come and gone.
• Star, why were you born?
Star: I was not born; I simply exist as I am.
• Star, you truly know a lot. Do you have any complaints?
Star: Yes, I do. People see me simply as a star.
• How should they see you?
Star: I am a star, but I have already departed from being a star.
• Oh, you truly know a lot! Are you me?
Star: Yes, I am.
• How were you enlightened of that?
Star: I came to know on my own during a long period of time.
• Star, Buddha became enlightened when he saw you – what does that mean?
Star: Even though I existed as I was, it was his mind that distinguished existence and non-existence of form. Then he realized on his own that to be with or without form is the same.
• Star, explain it more simply so that others can understand.
Star: When Buddha saw the sky, I existed amidst nothingness. He saw me and realized that what shape is and shapeless is, and that both are the same. Buddha knew that originally I was without a shape but changed to a shape.
• Star, to what extent have I been enlightened?
Star: You are completely without self, and you alone in the world have reached the state of enlightenment. Though you live life, you are not bound to it; you love but you are not in it; you yearn and yet you are not bound by yearning; you curse but you are not bound by cursing. You have departed from all things so you are the highest and ultimate pioneer of Truth, for the first time in the history of the Universe.
• Star, do you even know such things?
Star: Yes, I do. I was recently enlightened of these things, and gained great freedom. I do not dwell in my form, though I have form; and my form exists amidst nothingness, and amidst existence all things exist, so all things are just as they are.
• Star, let’s talk again another time. You truly know my heart.
