📖 Introduction

What does it truly mean to be a good doctor?

Is it just about treating physical symptoms—or is it about understanding the patient’s heart as well?

This heartfelt testimonial from Santa Clara Meditation shares the story of a young doctor who transformed from stress, judgment, and emotional distance into a compassionate healer who truly listens and cares.

Through this meditation, he discovered that real healing begins not only in the body—but in the mind.

💬 Meditation Testimonial: Becoming a True Doctor Who Understands the Patient’s Heart

By Deok Il S. | Korean Medicine Doctor

In the lively streets of Yeongdeungpo Market in Seoul, filled with small shops, food stalls, and the warmth of everyday life, there is a small clinic.

Among hardworking vendors and elderly residents, one young doctor is especially loved—Deok Il Shin.

With his warm personality, strong presence, and sincere heart, he has become someone many patients treat like a son or grandson.

But there was a time when he felt very different inside.

“At one point, the whole world felt like nothing but stress.”

A Doctor Loved Like Family

Patients often bring him small gifts—sweet potatoes, corn, snacks, even homemade side dishes—placing them gently on his desk.

They worry that he might skip meals.

“They hold my hands and say I remind them of their son or grandson.
When I hold their rough hands, I often think of my own parents.”

Many of his patients live alone, longing for warmth and connection. He realized that their illnesses often came not only from physical causes—but from emotional loneliness.

So beyond prescriptions and acupuncture, he began to value something even more:

Listening.
Holding their hands.
Understanding their lives.

But this wasn’t always natural for him.

A Self-Centered Mind He Couldn’t See

He once believed that being a good doctor meant treating patients sincerely.

But in reality, he found himself becoming irritated by patients and judging them internally.

“Outwardly, I acted like I cared, but inside I was thinking,
‘That’s why they’re sick.’”

At home, things weren’t much better.

He often looked down on his parents for their simple ways of speaking and living. He dismissed their words and failed to appreciate their sacrifices.

Even his relationship with his girlfriend ended, leaving him overwhelmed with emotional pain.

He tried advice from others, exercise, even drinking—but nothing solved the problem.

That’s when he realized:

This was not a physical issue—it was a problem of the mind.

The First “Thank You” in His Life

He began practicing this meditation after a recommendation from a colleague.

Just a few days later, something unexpected happened.

At the dinner table his mother had prepared, he found himself saying:

“Mother, thank you.”

It was the first time in his life he had ever said those words.

“I was shocked. I had never said that before.
At that moment, I knew this meditation works.”

Letting Go of the False Self

He committed fully to this meditation, even taking time away from his clinic to focus on it.

As he reflected deeply, he realized:

The “self” he believed in—his pride, his judgments, his superiority—was not his true self, but a false image created by his mind.

He began discarding those false images one by one.

During this process, he experienced intense shoulder pain—as if carrying a heavy burden.

When he let go of the identity of “being responsible” and “carrying everything,” the pain disappeared.

“That’s when I realized the body and mind are truly connected.”

Understanding the Root of Illness

Through his practice, he came to a deeper understanding of medicine itself.

In traditional medicine, emotional states affect the body. While treatments can temporarily ease symptoms, they cannot remove the root cause.

“If you cannot remove the root—the mind—true healing is difficult.”

This realization answered many questions he had struggled with during his medical studies.

A New Way of Treating Patients

After returning to practice, everything changed.

“Instead of thinking I am ‘saving’ patients,
I now focus on helping them live more comfortably.”

He became more humble, more relaxed, and more open.

Instead of imposing his knowledge, he began by listening.

He also started asking patients about their relationships and emotional lives—understanding that much suffering comes from conflicts with loved ones.

“When I simply listen without my own thoughts,
people feel truly comfortable.”

Becoming a Real Doctor

He now participates in volunteer medical services, helping underserved communities.

But he says he is the one who learns the most.

He describes this meditation as:

“A study that teaches you how to become a true human being.”

Through this journey, he discovered gratitude—for life, for others, and for the opportunity to serve.

“Now, when I treat patients,
I finally feel like I’ve become a real doctor—
one who can understand not only the body, but the heart.”
