INTRODUCTION

✨ In this reflection, Master Woo Myung examines a poem by the Korean philosopher Yi Hwang about human nature and sainthood. 🌌

🌿 While Yi Hwang suggests that human nature is fundamentally good and that clarity of knowledge separates saints from ordinary people, Master Woo Myung explains that this view does not fully align with Truth. 🌠

Human nature is neither good nor bad, and a true saint is not defined by knowledge alone, but by having entered the state of Truth. ✨

ORIGINAL WRITING BY MASTER WOO MYUNG

The following is a poem written by Yi Hwang:

Human nature is fundamentally good;
this has not changed in the past or present,
neither will it in the future.
Then how is it some become saints,
while I am just an ordinary person?
The reason is that what one knows is not clear.

Is this poem in keeping with Truth?

This poem of Yi Hwang is not in keeping with Truth. Human nature is not good or bad; so what he said is not true. His statement that the ordinary person’s knowledge is “not clear” is right but who he saw as being saints were not truly saints. A saint is a saint only when he has entered the state of Truth and acts accordingly.

🌿 REFLECT AT SANTA CLARA MEDITATION

At Santa Clara Meditation, this teaching is contemplated as a way to understand sainthood beyond concepts. By discarding the false mind and entering Truth, one moves beyond ideas of good and bad and toward true clarity—exactly as taught by Master Woo Myung. đźŚ
