What are the roots of the human mind? Why do thoughts arise like clouds when the thoughts originally did not exist, and why do they not disappear but stay and become stronger and more stubborn?
The roots of human minds are arrogance, pride, and greed which people find difficult to discard. The reason man cannot give up these minds is because they are tools that help to sustain his existence. It is said that the roots of the human mind are deep. This means that one’s mind has become dark and thick because of his greed, and that this disposition has taken over a large part of his mind.
When a person is young, he does not have minds. They are made as he lives his life and they settle in his chest like a cloud. They continue to breed other minds, and in doing so they harden and become larger. The way to take off these minds is to repent but this cannot wholly remove them all, which is why one must liberate himself completely through dō — by seeking Truth.
