Pascal, Miracles, and Human Greatness
Pascal said that if a miracle had not happened, it would not have been a sin for him to be without faith, but it is a sin since it did happen. He also said that man is greater than the Universe because man can think of the Universe while the Universe cannot think of man, and that a small insect can stop the thoughts of a great philosopher. Which of these statements is correct?
The reason Pascal sought to know Truth through miracles is that he did not know true Truth. True Truth does not exist in miracles; it is one and unchanging. He said that faith lay in miracles because he did not know Truth, and it is even more incorrect to say that man is greater than the Universe.
The Universe is perfection: it creates all things and gathers them back in, and it is what makes the celestial bodies move of and by themselves, according to nature’s flow. Pascal tried to make the Universe fit his small thoughts, but there is nothing that the Universe does not know because it is omnipotent and omniscient; it is an existence that has everything. His thoughts are not Truth; they are one-sided and thus he cannot call himself great.
What is correct is his statement that a small insect can stop the thoughts of a great philosopher. This is because philosophers do not know Truth. Thus when they see an insect and the thought occurs that it is not Truth, they must change their way of thinking.
