🧘‍♂️ Why True Happiness Begins by Putting Down Your Burdens

So many people carry the invisible weight of worries, regrets, expectations, and responsibilities—often without even realizing it. But what if the key to happiness was as simple as letting go?

In this beautifully symbolic story, a man seeks wisdom from a Great Teacher and learns that holding on is a choice—and so is freedom. This parable mirrors what Santa Clara Meditation teaches through mind subtraction: that the suffering we feel isn’t because life is inherently hard, but because we refuse to let go of what no longer serves us.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, burdened, or stuck, this story will inspire you to reflect on what you’re still carrying—and why you haven’t put it down yet.

A man who was having a difficult life went in search for the Great Teacher’s home and asked.

“I am having a difficult time. Please teach me how to be happy.”

The Great Teacher was in the garden and was tending to the flowers. He asked the man to hold his bag for a moment since he had to examine the flowers.

The man, taken by surprise, took the bag and carried it.

At first, the bag was not heavy. But it slowly became heavier and heavier.

After much patience, he finally asked.

“How long do I have to carry this bag?”

Upon hearing this question, as if he was at awe, the Great Teacher said

“What? All this time, if it was heavy, why were you carrying it instead of putting it down?”

“What?!…”

At that moment, the man realized.

If he wanted to be happy,

Just like the bag, if there is something heavy

All he had to do was put it down.
