What does it truly mean to perform Chundo? According to Master Woo Myung, the real passage to Heaven begins while one is alive—by finding the true self and becoming Truth.

If the one performing the rite is not Truth, the prayers are meaningless. But if one becomes Truth, then both the living and the dead may reach the Land of Truth through that connection.

Chundo (Prayers or Rites for the Passage of the Dead into Heaven)
Finding one’s true self is the study and the method to go to the land of Truth while he is still living. It is what Buddhism calls ye su jae (Buddhist rites of passage to heaven for the living) which is to send oneself to the land of Truth. Finding one’s true self is like performing chundo for one’s self while he is still living.
Many religions, shamans, and other organizations also have similar rites to chundo. When such kinds of rites or prayers are performed, the dead end up going to the mind world of the person performing them. If the person performing them is Truth, the dead go to the land of Truth; if he is false, they go to a false world.
If you are not Truth right now, the place where you worship or practice is false. Moreover, if a place has not been able to make a living person become Truth, then the rites performed there are also false.
Only the place of Truth can send people to the land of Truth. Making living people become Truth and performing chundo for the dead, which is sending them to the land of Truth, can only be done by Truth.
